PEABODY GAZETTE Μαy 9th, 1879

EDITOR GAZETTE

Nothing has transpired worthy of note since our last communication, nevertheless, here is a brief summary of our observations.

☞Farmers in our vicinity are rejoicing over the prospect of healthy crops since recent rains; corn has come up nicely, and most of it is now being cultivated.

☞ Why has “Num Skull” concluded to quit writing? He was a sober and honest man that never pounded his wife. He never took any interest in a dog fight, and never was known to pawn some other person’s watch. He never attempted to steal a sawmill, was above reproach, and was a shining light in the community. He was looked up to and honored, but a change came in an evil hour when he went to Reno county; little did he understand the deceit of this wicked world, but his eyes were soon opened. However, he soon found that he was a free-lover and that his chief amusement on Sunday was cock-fighting, card-playing. On top of it all, he sold his vote every election to the highest bidder. And so now finds that he isn’t fit for any place.

These charges, though without the slightest foundation, were believed by a portion of the inhabitants of Reno county. “Num Skull,” says it is too great stain on his character and thinks he has made his last trip to Reno.

☞Last Monday, our town was nearly deserted, caused by the show, being in EIDorado. 【what show】

☞ Rev. Budd, from Dallas city, Ills., has arrived and will preach for the people of Plum Grove and vicinity the balance of this conference year; his first quarterly meeting will be held at Plum Grove on the 1st Sabbath in June.

☞ Forty prairie schooners passed our town in one day last week, all bound for Colorado.
