EDITOR: Gazette
The general password in this vicinity continues to be HOT; both young and old give it in meeting. Corn is suffering for want of rain in this vicinity.
☞Last Sunday, there was a large concourse of people gathered at Morgan’s Grove on the east branch of the Whitewater to hear Rev. Budd. After the sermon was delivered, several persons received the ordinance of Baptism by immersion. Later in the day, four young ladies resolved that they would take a drive, as we saw them start, we found we would have another item. Our conclusion soon vanished as the horses only ran about ten rods when the wagon with its load was turned over, and horses were free from the vehicle. Neither of the young ladies was hurt, but the vehicle badly demolished.
☞There is considerable sickness in this vicinity, among the young children. Mr. H. Burr, B. Cloud, A. L Clever, and H. Struble, have each buried their youngest child this week.
☞We clip the following from the Carthage Gazette of Illinois: Some months ago, parties were selling cheap buggies through the country, there are now parties calling on those that purchased claiming that they hold a mortgage on their carriage and claim fifty dollars. Some are paying the demand, others will try titles. It is a game equal to the lightning rod swindle.
☞Doctor Seamans’ father is visiting at this place.
☞S. Sharplers left last Monday for McPherson Centre.
☞Idiot’s report regarding Jim Tucker and Mliss Ella Stewart being married are false. We can, however, confirm the case of bigamy reported by McCurious is genuine, we understand that the gentleman deeded wife No. two the farm and then left for cooler quarters.
