Kansas poem
”A Star Cus” travels to county fairs in Illinois, Iowa, and back to Kansas, in search of a lofty perspective from which to sit in judgement, and came home with a newfound appreciation for the goodness of our countryside.

PLUM GROVE ITEMS, October 25th, 1878

Since our last communication we have paid a visit to Illinois and Iowa, and returned satisfied that Kansas is far ahead of those states in an agricultural point of view. Warren, Hancock and Adams counties, are called the banner counties for corn in the State of Illinois ; this season Marion and Butler counties will yield ten per cent more corn to the acre than either of those. In our travels we attended two county fairs in Illinois; we also attended the Marion county fair, and we must say that at the Marion county fair we saw a better display of swine, wheat and vegetables than we saw at any fair in Illinois.

-Mr. Geo. Ogden, of Plum Grove, has a colt that wears a ribbon, denoting that it received the premium for sweepstakes at the Marion county fair. Mr. Ogden is one of Butler county’s model farmers and fine stock raisers.

– The school in this place commenced on last Monday; Miss Boersma presides.

– Dr. Davis is slowly recovering from his long seige of sickness.

-Plum Grove now has communication with the whole world. Mr. A. Moore started his stage line from Newton to ElDorado last Monday, which makes three trips per weck.

-Mrs. Stark Spencer’s health has inproved since her trip cast.

A STAR CUSS.
